SOMERTON - No injuries were reported in an accident Thursday on Belmont 102 involving an Amish buggy and UPS truck.
According to reports from the St. Clairsville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a horse-drawn buggy went left of center and struck the United Parcel Service truck before going off the roadway and overturning on a hill.
Troopers said Jeremy S. West, 31, of 50237 Ohio 78, Clarington, was driving the 2003 Freightliner for UPS north on Belmont 102, Stumptown Road, near Somerton when the accident occurred.
Officials said a southbound 1999 Amish buggy driven by Mary J. Hershberger, 25, of 58995 Warrick Road, Barnesville, was heading south on Belmont 102 about two miles north of Ohio 800 when the horse 'spooked' and went left of center.
West reportedly brought the UPS truck to a stop when the the buggy was passing. The buggy struck the truck before being pulled by the horse over a hill. West told troopers he saw the driver of the buggy emerged from the capsized carriage after the horse dragged it about 20 feet off the roadway.
The horse reportedly continued pulling the overturned buggy over the hill.
No injuries were reported. The UPS truck reportedly sustained minimal damage. The buggy sustained more substantial damage, according to reports. Troopers said the owner of the buggy, Jake Weaver of Jerusalem, later retrieved the wrecked vehicle.
